The dragon fruit is native to Central and South America. It is however grown commercially in Asian countries regularly. Thailand, Sri Lanka, India are now the primary producers of dragon fruit in Asia. The outer skin of the fruit bears scales which is probably why it has got the name. Contrary to the belief, this fruit does not grow on a tree but on a cactus which has flowers that bloom only for a limited number of hours. Typically only a single night.
